Every year I see the published lists of Christmas lights in Belconnen, and every year I feel overwhelmed by the choice and limited time to see them all (especially when I leave it to the last minute/week).
For me, the perfect Christmas lights experience is getting in as many ‘Wow, that’s awesome!’ houses before I get annoyed listening to the GPS and/or too many hours go past. Achieving this means knowing where the best houses are. Once you’ve knocked these over, you can enjoy the fantastic efforts of so many contributors throughout town – every house offers something magical!
So, if you’ve only got a limited amount of time before your patience runs out, here are my top three picks in Belconnen (and they’re all pretty close together!).
1. 94 Springvale Drive, Hawker
This house seems to faithfully deliver year after year. We’re free to walk around, and up the steep driveway is a running model train, plenty of music, a Santa sleigh on the roof and a nativity scene. And it just looks good. Like all the good lights, it’s obviously planned, but I like that everything’s spread out and there’s so much intricate detail that you have to look closely at to fully appreciate.
2. Scurry Street, Dunlop
Scurry Street is one of those streets where a number of neighbours chip in and give their best efforts, none more so than the house on the corner block which has beautifully coordinated lights and plenty to look at and admire. From here there are two other houses just a few steps away – including one which looks like it’s right out of Frozen! – and a short trip around the corner is 53 James Harrison Street which has a modest but very good display. Scurry Street delivers!
3. 106 Archdall Street, Dunlop
If 94 Springvale is my ‘old faithful’, then it seems like 106 Archdall is the rest of Belconnen’s ‘old faithful’. We turn into Archdall Street from Ginninderra Drive and if it didn’t stand out from all the lights pretty lights, the amount of cars make it pretty obvious! This is another lights display which you can walk right into and explore. Of my top 3, it’s got the most Australian theme, its lights go the highest in the sky (you have to see it to understand what I’m talking about!) and it’s just, well, stunning. I could spend a lot of time here!
What do you think? Have I got it right? Have I missed an extraordinary Belco house? Let me know!
Tara, 32 Tarrabool Street Amaroo is pretty good.
Bainton cres in Melba has two spectacular houses. There arealso a couple in murranji st, Hawker, close to Kingsford Smith dr end. Worth the trip for both!
Thanks for sharing! I’ll take my little girl tonight
