Canberra Cake Club – February

23 Feb

Canberra Cake Club began after a lovely Perth blogger mentioned Perth’s Secret Cake Club to a group of enterprising Canberra bloggers… in just a matter of months the Club was formed and the first Canberra ‘Cakeup’ was held at Gold Creek’s Stripey Sundae around an icecream theme (what else!). February marks the second ever Cakeup…

I arrive a little late to Kingston’s Essential Ingredient which has closed early to very generously host the February Cakeup. The theme is ‘secret ingredient’. To attend, aspiring cake bakers have registered with the Club and have a +1 to help them eat all the cake (see more of how it works here). As well all know my history of cooking has included pouring burnt toffee in a sink and microwaving noodles in a plastic bowl without water, not to mention that I don’t understand the settings on our oven, I’m here as a +1 to help eat cake!

I’m poured a glass of bubbly and get a first look at the spread. Cakes have all their ingredients displayed except for the secret ingredient, which guests are asked to guess in order to win a prize from Essential Ingredient. I’ve never seen so many good looking cakes!

And from the other side

Where to start with these cakes? There’s pistachio and lime cupcakes, numerous chocolate cakes including one extraordinarily high one, a cake where ingredient is in the name so it’s a secret (!), a caramel cake and a cake in the shape of the Canberra Cake Club logo (clever!).

Cake Club is all about no judging… but I can’t help but say that this gingerbread cake was the first I tasted and remained my favourite.

So, so good

What could the secret ingredient be?

What could the secret ingredient be?

After we’ve over-indulged and are each on something of a sugar high (me especially so!), as well as browsing Essential Ingredient’s huge store, the secret ingredients are revealed – and bakers and guests are welcome to take home slices of cake. (Seriously, what’s not to like about this?) The secret ingredients are difficult to guess – the winner guesses just four cakes’ secret ingredients correctly!

The tall caramel cake? Its secret ingredient is bacon. Mm, delicious bacon.

Bacon and potato are contained in these cakes

You're essentially (see what I did there) obligated to leave with a big plate of cake!

There’s a lot to like about Canberra Cake Club and the associated Cakeups – from the great location (I wonder what’s next?), the themes, the people and, of course, the cakes!

Date: Sunday, 23 February 2014

Where: Essential Ingredient, Kingston (but each Cakeup has a different location)

Cost: Free

Worthwhile factor: Highly worthwhile (warning: pace yourself!)

We were all rather desperate for water at the end of it! Cheese is a good idea!
